I’m glad to share! This is one of my dearest favorite plants in the PNW. It grew in the shade under my parents’ porch when I was a kid. Something about it really sings to me—probably the pink flowers and rainy accompaniments.

Gorgeous, gorgeous currant! I can tell that those leaves are brand new. I looked last year for any kind of Ribes at a bunch of nurseries around here, and it seemed to me at the time that they’d been wiped off the face of the earth! So excuse me while my mouth hangs open at your pic, proof that they indeed still exist. Oh, and thanks for the lovely poetry at my blog!

I was skeptical when I heard that gin came from juniper berries. Then I cut one open and sniffed it. That’s the stuff!

While you can buy pine nuts from many places in the Southwest, most of the nuts for sale in the US are from Pinus koraiensis, an Asian species, not our native pinyon. Which is actually probably good since pinyon are in a bit of trouble (massive mortality!) and each seed unharvested is a potential seedling.
